The National Plan for the Development of Very High Capacity Networks of the Czech Republic

Strategies and Action Plans

The National Plan for the Development of Very High Capacity Networks (VHCN) aims to improve internet connectivity across the Czech Republic significantly. This initiative is driven by the increasing demand for digital services from citizens and businesses, necessitating reliable and rapid internet access. The strategic document outlines the crucial steps to expand and enhance the infrastructure required for such high-speed electronic communications. This initiative is part of the broader ‘Digital Czech Republic’ concept and aligns with the Czech Republic’s Innovation Strategy for 2019-2030. It directly connects to the National Investment Plan and is in effect until 31 December 2027, unless amended by a government resolution.

A significant aspect of the National Plan is its alignment with both regional and European Union directives, ensuring that it complements broader connectivity goals set for 2025. These include providing all households with connections of at least 100 Mbit/s, capable of being upgraded to gigabit speeds, and ensuring that public institutions like schools, universities, and government offices have access to even higher speeds.

The plan recognises the role of VHCN networks in facilitating digital transformation across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and public administration. It stresses the importance of these networks in supporting advanced digital services, such as telemedicine and autonomous vehicle operations, which are becoming increasingly crucial in both urban and rural settings.

The National Plan also addresses the socioeconomic disparities in network access, particularly the digital divide between urban and rural areas. It outlines the intended measures to stimulate investment in VHCN infrastructure, leveraging both public and private funds, to ensure comprehensive national coverage.
