The Cyprus Artificial Intelligence National Strategy

Strategies and Action Plans

The Cyprus Artificial Intelligence National Strategy outlines the country’s goals and actions for leveraging AI to improve its economy and society. It aims to maximise investments through partnerships, develop national data spaces, foster talent and lifelong learning, and build ethical and trustworthy AI.

Key strategic pillars include:

Cyprus plans to attract both public and private investments by creating partnerships between the public sector, academia, and businesses. Special focus is placed on encouraging small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups to adopt AI solutions. The government aims to create incentives, provide financial support, and ensure that research results benefit industries.

The strategy emphasises the importance of sharing and enhancing data interoperability across sectors. This would involve developing portals for open and research data, ensuring that AI solutions have access to high-quality, safe, and structured data.

To support AI growth, Cyprus plans to expand its educational programs in AI, offering specialised training and lifelong learning opportunities. The goal is to retain local researchers while attracting international talent, thereby building a strong AI workforce.

The strategy recognises the ethical challenges posed by AI, such as bias in decision-making. It proposes creating an ethics committee to ensure that AI applications respect fundamental rights and follow ethical standards.

This strategic framework is aligned with the EU’s coordinated AI plan, which emphasises investment, data sharing, advanced skills, and trust-building to make Europe a global leader in ethical AI development.
