The twenty-third session of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) took place from 10 to 12 June online.

The event was originally scheduled to take place from 23 to 27 March 2020 in Geneva.

The commission represents a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Under the supervision of the UN Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the commission is meant to provide the UN General Assembly and ECOSOC with high-level advice on relevant science and technology issues. 

The commission will address two priority themes:

  1. Harnessing rapid technological change for inclusive and sustainable development.

  2. Exploring space technologies for sustainable development and the benefits of international research collaboration in this context.

The commission will also review progress made in the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society and listen to presentations on science, technology, and innovation policy reviews of Ethiopia, Panama, and Uganda.

Participants will include representatives of governments, civil society, the private sector, and international organisations.
