Zimbabwe’s NetOne chooses Huawei for telecom network upgrade

NetOne, Zimbabwe’s incumbent telecom operator TelOne’s mobile division, has chosen Chinese technology supplier Huawei to modernize its telecom network. This forms part of the strategic cooperation between China and Zimbabwe and is financed up to $400,000 by China. This is phase 2 of NetOne’s network modernization operation, aimed at enhancing broadband access across the country. Huawei’s financial and technological support demonstrates a calming of previously tense relations between China and Zimbabwe over NetOne. China had indefinitely suspended funding for the operator’s $71 million expansion project in October after the Zimbabwean government seized the investment capital. NetOne’s network upgrade will facilitate more broadband access to citizens which is key for the government’s commitment to digital transformation.
