US President warns of the cyber-arms race

On the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Hangzhou, China, the US President Obama has warned of a cyber-arms race by the countries that have significant cyber capacity, which could turn cyberspace into a “Wild Wild West”. He also warned that the US has ‘more capacity than anybody, both offensively and defensively”. Obama, however, did not comment on investigations by the US authorities over the recent hacking cases which allegedly originated from Russia, yet he confirmed that the US had ‘problems with cyber intrusions from Russia in the past’. Interestingly, the G20 Communique has not dealt with cybersecurity beyond mentioning it, unlike the previous Antalya communique which was particularly rich about cyber-threats.
