UN rapporteur warns Freedom of Expression is under attack

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the freedom of opinion and expression, David Kaye, presented the report Promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression to the UN General Assembly on 21 October, in which he notes that ‘There is no question that governments worldwide are wielding the tools of censorship’. According to a UN article on the topic, the report details ‘increasing instances where governments assert rationales having no basis in human rights law’. Of particular concern is that Intern kill switches are being used for network shutdowns, among other forms of digital censorship.
