Ugandan police admit using facial recognition technology

Ugandan police have issued a statement confirming the deployment of a nationwide project which involves the installation of Huawei street cameras and facial recognition technology ‘as a measure to strengthen law and order’. The police claim that the system has already contributed to increased security in the capital Kampala, where the system is almost completely installed. The non-governmental organisations Unwanted Witness reacted to the statement, arguing that there is a ‘lack of accountability and transparency when it comes to the collection of personal data’.
