Twitter announced some major changes to address misinformation around the USA elections or other civic processes. The platform is applying restrictions on Tweets with a misleading information label from US political figures, including candidates and campaign accounts, US-based accounts with more than 100,000 followers, or accounts that obtain relevant engagement. Users will be required to tap through a warning to see misleading Tweets from these accounts. In addition, users will not be able to like, retweet and reply such Tweets, which will no longer be algorithmically recommended by the platform. Twitter aims to reduce the visibility of misleading information in the US presidential election process. The new policy will enter into force in 20 October and will be maintained at least until one week after the presidential elections, when the platform will assess if it is necessary to continue it.
