The State of the World's Girl reports 58% girls have been harassed and abused online

The outcome of the survey "State of the World's Girls Report" conducted by Plan International in twenty two countries highlights that 58 per cent respondents had  faced online abuse on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, and TikTok.

The online harassment which was directed to the girls were of different nature, ranging from threats of sexual violence, physical harm, harassment due to their identities,  racist comments and stalking and abusive and insulting language. 

Of the girls harassed, 42 per cent identified themselves  as being from the LGBTIQ+ community; 14 per cent self-identified themselves as having a disability; and 37 per cent identified themselves belonging to ethnic minorities.
