South Africa high court suspends spectrum sale

The South Africa High Court has suspended the sale and issuance of spectrum licences for ultra fast broadband. Consequently, the country’s Independent Communications Authority (ICASA) has been ordered to halt the process of spectrum licence issuances that had been initiated in October 2020.

The sale of frequencies was opposed by operator Telkom and broadcaster e.tv. who argued that the conditions for sale favoured large players such as MTN and Vodacom. The ICASA is considering appealing the decision.
