Rise of the central bank digital currencies (CBDC) – report by the Bank for International Settlement

The Bank for International Settlement (BIS) updated its report on the Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC). The report named: ‘Rise of the central bank digital currencies: drivers, approaches and technologies’ follows the global developments around the CBDCs and tracks the national initiatives. The updated report recognised three retail CBDC in the world. In the Bahamas, the Eastern Caribbean and Nigeria. There is also one initiative coming soon to life in Jamaica. At the same time there are 28 pilot programs around the world, and 68 central banks have communicated publicly about their work on the central bank digital currency.

This number is expected to grow in 2022, as more and more national banks proclaim work on digital versions of its currency as a priority in the forthcoming period. You can find the full report at the BIS website.
