Nigeria sets up digital ID steering committee

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a Digital ID Steering Committee chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha. Nigeria has previously attempted to issue digital IDs, with a 2018 initiative under the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) having issued 41 million national identification numbers (NIN). Other digital IDs include bank verification numbers, digital driver’s licenses, passports, and biometric verification for services offered by various states. The committee is therefore expected to analyse existing regulatory frameworks and propose an integrated roadmap for digital ID for the country which has a population of over 200 million.
