New gTLDs significantly contributing to the increase of the domain name industry in Q2 of 2016

Verisign’s recent Domain Name Industry Brief reveals a total of approximately 334.6 million domain names registration across all top level domains (TLDs) in the second quarter of 2016. This represents an increase of approximately 7.9 million domain names registrations, or 2.4% over the first quarter of the year. An analysis of the brief, undertaken by DomainIncite, shows that new gTLDs contributed 5.9 million of the 7.9 million domain names quarterly increase (approximately 72%), making this ‘the biggest contribution new gTLDs have made to growth in any quarter to date’. In a broader picture, new gTLDs totaled 22 million domain name registrations, representing 6.6% of total domain name registrations. According to Verisign, the five largest TLDs as on 30 June 2016 were: .com, .tk, .cn, .de and .net.
