IoT devices to reach 46 billion in 2021

Recent research published by Juniper predicts that the number of connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices and sensors will reach over 46 billion by 2012. The 200% increase (compared to 2016) will be mainly driven by a reduction in the unit costs of hardware, while the industrial and public services will register the highest growth over the forecast period. With regard to cybersecurity, the study notes that ‘there has been a growing recognition in the industry that the importance of establishing trust in the data is fundamental to the success of the IoT’. However, it is expected that security will play a major factor in holding the consumer IoT back.
