India to regulate social media, online news, and video streaming platforms
India’s government issued an order giving power to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to oversee content on social media, online news, and video streaming platforms. This action is part of the ruling Hindu nationalist party Bharatiya Jana’s strategy to regulate the digital sphere, which is offering more space for critical journalism than traditional media in the country. Following the government’s move, there is fear that the ministry will censor online content.
