Facebook offers African language support to curb fake news

African fact-checking organisation Africa Check has partnered with Facebook in order to tackle the spread of fake news. The programme was launched first in 2018 and has now expanded the local language targeting system to more than 10 different local languages including Nigeria’s Yoruba and Igbo, Senegal’s Wolof and South Africa’s Afrikaans, Zulu, Setswana and Sotho among other languages. This improvement is aiming at better tackling the spread of misinformation at the local level where fake news is spread in languages other than English and French.
