EU finalises toolbox for COVID-19 contact tracing apps

With the support of the European Commission, the e-Health Network developed a common EU toolbox to help member states navigate the development and implementation of privacy-enhancing technological solutions to fight against COVID-19. To ensure that contact tracing apps are fully compliant with EU rules, the toolbox established requirements for tracing apps, including that they must be voluntary, use privacy-preserving technologies and anonymised data, be time-limited, interoperable, accessible, secure, and reflect accepted scientific guidance, according to a press release. The toolbox was developed as part of the efforts set out in the EU Commission Recommendation last week. Member states are requested to report on their actions by 31 May 2020 and make their measures open for peer review by other member states and the commission.
