ECOSOC adopts resolution on the role of frontier technologies in fulfilling SDGs

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted a resolution on the role of frontier technologies in fulfilling sustainable development goals (SDGs) under the title implementation of General Assembly resolution 71/243 on the quadrennial comprehensive policy review of operational activities for development of the United Nations system. “I strongly believe that without these new technologies and future technological breakthroughs, it will be impossible for us to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. During the ECOSOC Integration Segment meeting on 8 July 2019 at the UN Headquarters in New York, Guterres noted that the artificial intelligence, cyberspace, biotechnology, and new weaponry have been surveyed by policy chefs. The opportunities and challenges frontier technologies and the fourth industrial revolution were also considered to ensure the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and all international commitments are achieved in an appropriate way for the digital age. Additionally, possible ways to integrate frontier technologies and new work methods into the business process were examined by heads of management and administration.
