Chinese propaganda ministry censors post about Oscar win for best director on social media and search engines

Chinese authorities have censored the news of Chloé Zhao’s Oscar win for best director on social media and search engines in the country. Zhao was born in Beijing and was the first Chinese woman to take the Oscar award for directing. Messages congratulating her work were removed from social media platforms. The Chinese search engines Baidu and Sogou had very few links to the Oscar news. In addition, no news about Zhao’s win was broadcasted on China Central Television. The country’s propaganda ministry allegedly required companies to not report the win due to Zhao’s ‘previous public opinion’.
