Australian Ministers commit to a national digital ID

Australian Ministers have identified a national approach to digital identity as a key priority for the nation. This was announced in a communique issued following the   Data and Digital Ministers’ Meeting on 16 April 2021. The national digital ID will be made to give Australians access to government services online. It will also enable sharing of data among government agencies. As part of the Commonwealth COVID-19 vaccination passports, the digital ID programme will also host a registry of vaccinated persons.

The meeting also agreed to shift the institution responsible for digital ID- the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) from Social Services to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
