On big data – cloud computing based requirements and capabilities (Recommendation no. Y.3600)

Principles and Recommendations

Big data refers to large masses of data which require non-traditional data processing applications. Due to its size and complexity, big data is difficult to analyse, store, transfer, and visualise. The need to adopt an international standard on big data has been linked to the global adoption of big data solutions.

Amongst other things, the recommendation Y.3600 on ‘Big data – Cloud computing based requirements and capabilities’ describes big data and the characteristics of its ecosystem from a standardisation perspective, and provides requirements, capabilities and use cases of cloud computing-based big data for large data sets which cannot be rapidly transferred and analysed by traditional technologies. Moreover, it outlines how cloud computing systems can be leveraged to provide big data services.
