Internet governance: The next steps

European Commission has brought the attention to the importance of Internet governance, which has become a ubiquitous tool for commerce, education, social services and everyday social interaction over the course of the past twenty years. Hence, defining the role of governments and their accountability is crucial in the times where Internet usage is so high, especially in the EU. It has become a critical resource, which disruption can have potentially catastrophic effects on society and the economy.

The Commission believes in maintaining the EU’s strong emphasis on the need for security and stability of the global Internet, the respect for human rights, freedom of expression, privacy, protection of personal data and promotion of cultural and linguistic diversity.
