Building the Information Society: a global challenge in the new millennium

Resolutions and Declarations

The Geneva Declaration of Principles, along with the Geneva Plan of Action, was adopted in 2003 by 175 countries in Geneva during the first phase of WSIS. The second phase of WSIS took place in Tunis. The objective of the first phase was the development by all stakeholders of a joint vision to reduce the digital divide and create a framework for an inclusive Information Society. It raised awareness about the potential of ICTs to improve our social, economic and political life, as they can serve as a catalyst for development in a wide range of areas. This Declaration defines ICTs as a tool for achieving the goals expressed in the Millennium Declaration and is a roadmap for the realisation of a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented Information Society.
