A European approach to media literacy in the digital environment

This Communication focuses on promoting the development and exchange of good practices in media literacy within the digital environment through existing programmes and initiatives. As media consumption is evolving for European citizens, media literacy is rapidly becoming an important component of European and national policy agendas in the media and communication sectors.This Communication focuses on three key areas: Media literacy for commercial communication, Media Literacy for audiovisual works and Media literacy online. It calls on Member States to:

• Encourage the authorities responsible for audiovisual and electronic communication regulations to increase their involvement and cooperation in the improvement of media literacy;

• Promote systematic research, regular observation and reporting on the different aspects and dimensions of media literacy;

• Develop and implement codes of conduct and, where necessary, co-regulatory frameworks in conjunction with all interested stakeholders at national level, as well as promote self-regulatory initiatives.
