Directive (EU) 2019/770 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 May 2019 on certain aspects concerning contracts for the supply of digital content and digital services

Regulations and Policies

Directive 2019/770 is part of the Digital Single Market Strategy for Europe. It focuses on establishing rules on contracts for the supply of digital content or digital services, such as rules on the conformity of digital content, the remedies available to consumers in the event of failure of digital content to comply with the contract and certain modalities for the exercise of said remedies. The Directive also aims to harmonise certain aspects regarding the right to terminate a long-term contract, along with certain aspects related to the modification of digital content. Those modalities are defined in order to achieve a genuine digital single market, increase legal certainty and reduce transaction costs, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. The Directive is due to enter into force in Member States by 1 July 2021 and its rules are to be applied as of 1 January 2022.
