The course will benefit diplomats who follow Internet governance (IG) and other Internet-related policy fields (e.g. telecommunications, human rights, cybersecurity, trade). While improving their knowledge of digital politics, participants will also gain the practical skills and knowledge required to follow current IG processes such as the global IG architecture, privacy and data protection, and cybersecurity. The course focuses in particular on diplomatic and policy processes in International Geneva.
The course covers the following issue areas:
- Introduction to IG and digital politicy
- Infrastructure and standardisation
- Legal Issues
- Economic Issues
- Development and sociocultural issues
- Human rights
- IG processes and actors
The course will run from 23 January to 26 March 2016, using a blended learning technique combining dynamic exchange in an online classroom with lunchtime learning sessions at the Geneva Internet Platform.
Throughout each course week, participants will interact in the online classroom. The weekly discussion will continue during group meetings scheduled for 13.00 to 14.00 each Monday. During the informal sandwich lunch, the teaching team will clarify pending issues from the week’s online interaction, and discuss ongoing policy processes with participants. The first, introductory, meeting is scheduled for Monday, 30 January.
Participants who complete the course successfully will receive a course certificate.
The course fee is CHF 1,500. A limited number of scholarships will be provided by the Swiss government. All requests for scholarships will be handled by the GIP.
