GIP Digital Watch curator Dr Katharina Hoene talked about the Current status and new developments in Internet governance capacity building during the session on 'Capacity building in Internet Governance: Stakeholder perspectives' (Monday, 5th September). The Global ICT Capacity Building Symposium (CBS) will take place on 6-8 September, with pre-events on 5 September, in Nairobi, Kenya. The Symposium is organised by the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and is hosted by the Communications Authority of Kenya.
The CBS is a global event for capacity development in the field of information and communication technology (ICT). It brings together stakeholders from across the world to discuss trends and developments in the ICT field, as well as their implications for human and institutional capacity building.
The 2016 edition of the Symposium will be held under the theme 'Embracing Capacity Building Opportunities in the Digital Era', and it will feature discussions on issues such as: capacity building in Internet governance, regulators as enablers and beneficiaries of capacity building, sustainable development goals and future priorities for human capacity building, coherence in capacity building, and new ways of learning in a digital era. Panellists and speakers include high-level officials such as ministers, director-generals of regulatory authorities, heads of UN organisations, CEOs of private sector companies, representatives from universities and research institutions, and other experts in ICT capacity building. An exhibition showcasing capacity building projects and best practices from academia and industry around the world will run for the duration of the Symposium.
It is expected that the outcomes of the Symposium will provide strategic guidance to the national and international community, including ITU, on capacity building in the field of ICT, and on strengthening collaboration among the global ICT capacity building community.
