The 14th World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS) will take place on 21-23 November 2016, in Botswana. The Symposium is organised by the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and hosted by the Government of Botswana.

As a global forum for telecommunication and information society measurements, WTIS includes high-level debates on key questions related to information and communications technology (ICT) policy and data. It brings together delegates from all over the world, ranging from ministers and business leaders to regulators, national statisticians, lead academics, and ICT data producers and analysts. The objective of the Symposium is to debate new and emerging issues on ICT data and statistics, and their role in policy making, and to provide strategic guidance to the international community on information society trends and future monitoring. It also develops standards and methodologies for producing high-quality data and statistical indicators.

WTIS-2016 will feature high-level debates, including a Ministerial Roundtable and a Leaders’ Dialogue. The Ministerial Roundtable will examine innovative policies on how to deliver the benefits of ICTs to all citizens and to ensure that no one is left behind. It will further debate the opportunities of ICTs to accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development. The Leaders’ Dialogue will discuss the impact of ICTs in such areas as economic growth, employment and security, and address data needs and new data sources. Other sessions of WTIS-2016 will focus on measurement issues related to cybersecurity, e-commerce, and big data, and address developments in monitoring the price and affordability of ICT services. During the Symposium, ITU will release the ICT Development Index (IDI), the global benchmarking tool that tracks countries’ progress in the development of their information societies.
