Paris Cyber Summit 2024

The Paris Cyber Summit 2024 is scheduled to take place from 3 until 5 June in Paris, France. The theme for this year’s summit is ‘Is Artificial Intelligence a game changer for cyber policies?’. 

The summit brings together European leaders and top decision-makers to discuss how to build trust in cyberspace with partners and allies. The summit will focus on digital, tech, cyberspace, and trust, with the challenge of maintaining the EU’s strength in the new world. It also seeks to draft a European approach to cyberspace and strengthen relationships based on shared values. Some of the speakers for the 2024 summit include David van Weel, NATO’s Assistant Secretary-General for Emerging Security Challenges, Catherine De Bolle, Executive Director of Europol, and Lorena Boix Alonso, Director for Digital Society, Trust & Cybersecurity at DG CONNECT – Spain.

Swiss IGF 2024


The Swiss Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2024 is set to take place on 5 June 2024, at Welle7, located at Schanzenstrasse 5, 3008 Bern, Switzerland.

Originating as a national counterpart to the UN’s global initiative on Internet Governance Forum, the Swiss IGF serves as a platform for collective agreement on internet regulations among all stakeholders. It is characterised by its open and complimentary access, welcoming all individuals interested in internet governance without any participation restrictions.

Utilising a participatory and inclusive approach, the forum encourages a bottom-up process for selecting discussion topics, ensuring that no subject is off-limits and all stakeholders are treated as equal partners in the dialogue.

As per the draft program released on 21 March 2024, the primary discussion topics are set to include the regulation of AI and cybersecurity, the Global Digital Compact, and various other digital governance issues.

G7 Summit 2024


The upcoming 50th G7 summit is scheduled to take place from 13 to 15 June 2024 in Fasano, Apulia, Italy.

Italy’s G7 agenda for 2024 aims to blend existing priorities with new emphases. These include continued support for Ukraine, addressing crises in the Middle East, ensuring energy security, and, as highlighted by the Italian Prime Minister, an increased focus on supporting African development and managing the challenges presented by AI.

The G7 Summit serves as a yearly gathering for leaders from the G7 member states: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US. Additionally, the EU, represented by the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission, partakes in all deliberations as guests.

EuroDIG 2024

The European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) 2024 is scheduled to take place from June 17–19 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The event will be hosted by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Lithuania (RRT) in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Lithuania and Public Institution GoVilnius.

EuroDIG is an open multistakeholder platform to exchange views about the internet and its governance. First organised in 2008 by several organisations, government representatives and experts, it fosters dialogue and collaboration with the internet community on public policy for the internet – culminating in an annual conference in a different European city every year. The results are conveyed in the form of ‘Messages’, which are forwarded to policymakers and fed into the annual global UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF).

The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2024

The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is scheduled to take place from 8 to 17 July 2024 under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). 

The ministerial segment of the forum will be held from 15 to 17 July 2024 as part of the High-level Segment of the Council. The last day of the High-level Segment of ECOSOC will be on Thursday, 18 July 2024.

The theme of the 2024 HLPF will be ‘Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions’. The HLPF meets annually to discuss the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDGs.

 The HLPF in 2024 will review in-depth the following sustainable development goals (SDGs):

  • Goal 1 (End poverty in all its forms everywhere),
  • Goal 2 (End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture),
  • Goal 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts),
  • Goal 16 (Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels), and
  • Goal 17 (Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development)

The HLPF 2024 will be the first HLPF under the auspices of ECOSOC after the 2023 SDG Summit – the HLPF convened under the auspices of the General Assembly in September 2023. The 2024 HLPF will support the implementation of the Political Declaration and other outcomes of the SDG Summit for advancing the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

UN OEWG 2021-2025 8th substantive session

The second UN open-ended Working Group (OEWG) on developments in the field of ICTs in the context of international security will hold its seventh substantive session from 8-12 July.

The OEWG is tasked with study of existing and potential threats to information security, and possible confidence-building measures and capacity building. It should also further develop rules, norms, and principles of responsible behaviour of states, discuss ways of implementing them, and explore the possibility of establishing regular open-ended institutional dialogue under the auspices of the UN.

2024 GGE on lethal autonomous weapons systems | Second session

The Group of Governmental Experts on emerging technologies in the area of lethal autonomous weapons systems (GGE on LAWS) will host its second 2024 meeting from 26 to 30 August.

As established by the 2023 Meeting of the High Contracting Parties to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, the GGE is to ‘further consider and formulate, by consensus, a set of elements of an instrumentwithout prejudging its nature, and other possible measures to address emerging technologies in the area of lethal autonomous weapon systems, taking into account the example of existing Protocols within the Convention, proposals presented by High Contracting Parties and other options related to the normative and operational framework on emerging technologies in the area of lethal. autonomous weapon systems, building upon the recommendations and conclusions of the Group, and bringing in expertise on legal, military, and technological aspects’.

Summit of the Future 2024

The Summit of the Future is a high-level UN event aimed at forging a new international consensus on how to deliver a better present and safeguard the future. The Summit is scheduled for 22-23 September 2024, preceded by a preparatory ministerial meeting on 18 September. The event will bring together UN member states, UN agencies, non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations, academic institutions, the private sector, and youth under the theme, ‘Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’.

The main objectives of the Summit of the Future are:

  1. To forge a new global consensus on what our future should look like and what we can do today to secure it;
  2. To adopt a concise, action-oriented Outcome Document, ‘A Pact for the Future,’ which will be agreed in advance by consensus;
  3. To establish a UN Special Envoy for Future Generations;
  4. To address other institutional reforms and initiatives.

The Summit is described as a ‘once-in-a-generation opportunity to recommit to fundamental principles and further develop the frameworks of multilateralism so they are fit for the future’. It follows on from a series of UN Summits and aims to strengthen global governance for the sake of present and future generations.
